With all of the mass shootings we have had recently in America, I am beginning to feel like we are under attack. We have had shootings at a church, nightclub, outdoor concert, movie theater, schools, and now our news media; The Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland on June 28, 2018. We have had more shootings in public spaces then I have even mentioned here. I do not feel safe in America today.
In Runner’s World (July 2018) I read about a Cross Country Coach, Scott Beigel, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS in Parkland, FL. This school year was his first year at the school. He was hired to teach geography and world history and asked in his interview to coach the cross country team. During the shooting, he didn’t have students in his class but he heard the commotion and opened his door to a stream of students looking for a safe place to hide. As Coach Beigel let the last student into his classroom and as he was closing the door, he turned and directly faced the shooter. He was shot six times. Once in the heart, once in each arm and three shots in the back. The killer kept walking down the hallway and did not enter the classroom.
We have a gun violence epidemic in our country and we need to do something about it. We are under attack in our public spaces. We have ordinary citizens making choices to save others as if we are at war. We are simply not trained to take bullets for others. We shouldn’t have to make that choice. The NRA is not keeping us safe. Please vote for people that want to keep us safe. More guns are not the solution. Less guns are the solution. Make America Safe Again.
